Utah photo dump 5: River House Ruins and Natural Bridges

Day 12: River House Ruins and Natural Bridges

We had planned a few more ruins hikes, in Lower Butler Wash, but current road conditions ruled that out for our 2wd car. Instead, we hiked to the River House Ruins (aka Snake House Ruins) along the San Juan river, along the west side of Comb Ridge. It was a spectacular hike!

Can you see the pottery shard?

The hike was long--about 10.25 miles. We thought we'd take a coffee break in Bluff and then hike to some petroglyphs, but there were no open coffee shops to be found, and I was tired of wearing hiking boots, so instead we drove to Natural Bridges National Monument to gawk at natural bridges before the sun set.

On the way, we were enticed by a turnoff to Butler Wash Ruins, a quick 1-mile hike that offers views of ruins from above.

We're guessing the facilities at the parking area aren't serviced very often...

The three bridges at Natural Bridges are named...

Sipapu...

Kachina...

...and Owachomo.

Thanks to the rain, we had a gorgeous sunset on the way back to Blanding.
